NWS confirmed an EF5 tornado touched down 2 miles south of Aplington, IA at 4:48PM CDT and traveled to southwest of Fairbank, IA. Unfortunately This tornado destroyed Parkersburg and New Hartford, IA, and killed 6 people and wounded 70 people. This tornado was rated as EF3 yesterday, but this afternoon NWS upgrade to EF5.
In the years 2000 to 2006 was not recorded EF5 tornado after May 3, 1999 Oklahoma City tornado, but after May 4, 2007 Greensburg, KS tornado, this year also recorded EF5 tornado. The temperature of last year was above normal, but last winter and this spring is below normal, it is the reason of climate instability and very active year of tornado. SPC Tornado Data
